Has anyone ever won the Open Championship by improving his score in each round? asked Paul Morrison
This has actually happened on four occasions, most recently at Muirfield in 1959 when the eventual champion Gary Player shot successive rounds of 75, 71, 70 and 68.
Before that the feat was achieved by Jack White at St George's, in Kent, in 1904 (80-75-72-69), James Braid at Muirfield in 1906 (77-76-74-73), and Ben Hogan at Carnoustie in 1953 (73-71-70-68).
Worthy of mention here perhaps is Densmore Shiute's victory at St Andrews in 1933, when he shot 73 in each of the four rounds of regular play, then beat Craig Wood in a play-off.
