Who has scored the most goals in European club competitions? asked Jimmy Wilson.
For years the answer to this one was the German goal machine Gerd Muller, who scored 69 for Bayern Munich in the major European club competitions (European Cup/Champions League, Cup Winners' Cup and UEFA Cup, plus the Super and Intertoto Cups).
The calculation is complicated by the fact that UEFA's own statistics don't include the Fairs Cup, as the UEFA Cup was known until 1972 (seven of Muller's 69 goals came in that).
But Muller was passed a few years ago by Raul, who finished up with 75 European goals: Filippo Inzaghi (70) has since eclipsed "Der Bomber" as well. The leading current player is Lionel Messi, with 67.
