Keeping up with the Klitschkos

I get confused by the Klitschko brothers, specifically which of them has fought who. Which British fighters have the brothers faced in the ring? asked George Kirkham

It is confusing, especially as till recently - when Vitali vacated the WBC crown in December 2013 - they held all four major versions of the world heavyweight title between them.

Vitali Klitschko's 47 professional fights have included five against British boxers, one of which (a win over Julius Francis) was before he won the title.

Vitali won the WBO crown by defeating Herbie Hide at Millwall in June 1999, but lost a challenge for the WBC title to Lennox Lewis in June 2003 (an earlier loss to the American Chris Byrd is his only other defeat).

After claiming the WBC belt following Lewis's retirement, Vitali's defences have included victories over Danny Williams (December 2004) and Dereck Chisora (February 2012).

Vitali's brother Wladimir Klitschko - he's five years younger at 37 - has had 64 fights, but only one of them against a Briton: his much-hyped defeat of David Haye in Hamburg in July 2011.

Wladimir has suffered three defeats overall. In 1998 he lost a non-title bout to the American Ross Puritty, then in March 2003 surrendered the WBO title to Corrie Sanders, a South African. The following year Wladimir took on Lamon Brewster for the now-vacant WBO title in Las Vegas, but lost again.

He won the WBO title back in April 2006, avenging his brother's defeat by Chris Byrd, and has made 15 successful defences since: along the way he has added the WBA and IBF titles to his bulging collection.
