Pressure on Kaymer at KLM OpenJosh Williams September 5, 2012
All eyes will be on Martin Kaymer at the KLM Open this week, as he bids to prove he is playing well enough to make the difference for Europe at the Ryder Cup.
Kaymer raised eyebrows when he opted not to play at the Johnnie Walker Championship last month, even though his spot in Jose Maria Olazabal's team was under threat from Nicolas Colsaerts.
In the event, Colsaerts did not do enough to dislodge the German - but question marks remain over both his form and his motivation for the tournament.
Olazabal sought to smooth over the issue, revealing that he had spoken to Kaymer and was left in no doubt that he was up for the fight. However, the way Kaymer is playing is harder to dismiss.
- Matteo Manassero E/W - 35/1 at bet365
Although he is a former world No. 1 and without weakness when at his best, it has been quite some time since he last reached that level. He has not managed a top ten on the European Tour since April, and at the US PGA Championship was 14-over through two rounds.
It goes without saying that, at 18/1, Kaymer should be avoided from a betting perspective. He's had a little break, which may have done him some good, but he has plenty to do to prove he won't be considered the European weak link at the Ryder Cup.
Looking at the stats from the past couple of years, the Hilversumsche course - a short par-70 - has rewarded accurate players who hit plenty of greens, and with conditions expected to stay calm across the weekend, I anticipate a low winning score.
It's the sort of course you see more regularly on the European Tour than you would Stateside: not the longest, and with a premium on tidy approach-work.
To my mind, the course sets up perfectly for Italian youngster Matteo Manassero, who may not have had the best of seasons, but nonetheless is a two-time winner on the European Tour despite being just 19.
He had three rounds in the 60s last time he played the KLM Open in 2010, eventually finishing 26th, and despite the odd struggle this year, can still boast five top-tens. Well worth a play, I'd say. Good luck!
