Australia's rugby fans will be asked to suggest law changes for trial use in the 2014 National Rugby Championship.

Australian Rugby Union (ARU) chief executive Bill Pulver said in announcing the championship on Tuesday that the third tier of rugby in Australia would "offer the opportunity to introduce innovative rules to the game to improve the spectacle for our fans". Now it seems the fans themselves, the paying customers, will be afforded the opportunity to suggest experimental laws to enhance the entertainment value of the game.

Rugby Gold reported on Thursday that the ARU was "planning to stage a social media campaign in the new year where it will invite fans to submit ideas on what ruled could be tweaked, removed or added to make the games more interesting".

Rugby Gold reported that ARU officials had already discussed the adoption of rules used in South Africa's university rugby competition - the Varsity Cup - in which conversions are worth three points, and penalties and drop goals are worth only two points.
