Christian Leali'ifano will undergo surgery on his right ankle next week to correct the injury problems he has suffered since having the joint reconstructed in 2012.

Leali'ifano delayed surgery to play for Australia in the Rugby Championship and on the tour of Europe, but he sustained a compression injury to the joint that forced him from the pitch at half-time of the Wallabies' 52-17 win against Argentina and regained a spot in the starting side only when injury ruled Brumbies team-mate Matt Toomua out of the Test against Wales.

He will not know the extent of the damage until after the surgery, but he may need a plate or possibly a major operation that could derail his Super Rugby 2014 season.

The Brumbies start their Super Rugby 2014 season against Queensland Reds at Canberra Stadium on February 22, but they are currently buoyed by knowledge that Leali'ifano is the only member of their Wallabies contingent who requires post-season surgery.

The bulk of the Test players will be rested from training until January 5, while hooker Stephen Moore and back-rower and captain Ben Mowen will enjoyed an extra week off.
