Birmingham has been awarded the 2018 World Indoor Championships after the International Association of Athletics Foundation handed Portland the 2016 event.

Both were chosen to host separate championships after the IAAF could not split their 2016 bids, with the American city preferred for the earlier event.

Birmingham previously hosted the event in 2003, while a £26 million overhaul of the National Indoor Arena is expected to be completed next year.

London's Olympic Stadium will host the World Championships in 2017; Moscow held this year's event in August.
