Pumas too strong for NSW

Argentina warmed up for their Rugby Championship opener against South Africa next weekend with a 58-12 victory over the New South Wales Barbarians in Salta on Friday night.

The Pumas only just edged out their Australian opponents 29-27 in their first clash in La Planta last weekend but were in much more impressive form at Estadio Padre Ernesto Martearena.

Santiago Phelan's much-improved side took control of the contest with four first half tries courtesy of Martin Landajo, Gonzalo Camacho, Juan Imhoff and Joaquin Tuculet that powered them to a 32-0 lead at the break with Felipe Contepomi and Juan Martin Hernandez sharing three conversions and two penalties.

A try from David Horwitz straight after the re-start offered NSW hope but usual service was soon resumed with Juan Manuel Leguizamon crossing before Camacho grabbed his second try. Horacio Agulla kept the scoreboard ticking over before Jed Holloway notched NSW's second try but the Pumas would have the final say with Paul Matera heaping further woe on the visitors. Replacement fly-half Nicolas Sanchez finished with three second half conversions.

The Pumas focus will now switch to their date with the Springboks in Bloemfontein next Saturday with the return clash scheduled for Mendoza the following weekend.
